CNI Thermal Hazard Concerns

Due to the thermal hazards associated with handling CNI there are key concerns covering:

Heat Hazard

  • Heat input from any source is dangerous

  • Sources of heat include:

    – Chemical reaction with incompatible materials

    – Pumps overheating

    – Heating systems, internal or external.

    – Thermal radiation from fire

Fire Hazard

  • Radiant heat from surrounding fires can heat up tanks and pipelines containing CNI

  • Apply deluge water onto storage tank walls to keep the product cool (15 litre/minute/m2 of exposed tank surface

  • Spray fire water at the required rate should be available for 2 – 6 hours

  • Drums and IBC’s should be immediately cooled by spraying firewater from a fixed deluge
