CNI Control Measures
As with all hazardous operations key control measures should be in place to minimise potential incidents:
Contamination
Contamination with acids, alkalis, reducing agents, oxidising agents, amines and phosphates
Example:
Ammonium sulphate solution – No reaction easily separable
Ammonium per-sulphate – Oxidiser = Reaction = Violent vessel failure
Composition of Blends
The amount of CNI in fuel packages varies depending upon the functional requirements of the specific additive package
Much of the hazardous properties of these additive compositions come from CNI but the other components cannot be ignored
With regard to decomposition, the general rule is to treat anything with > 15% CNI as if it was 100%
