Shell UK has carried out various tests/experimental work involving CNI thermal decomposition, their conclusions are that:
Exothermic decomposition does occur in fire or heat exposed pipework
However, while the rate of pressure rise is extremely rapid it is not “Explosive”
Pressure relief is sufficient to prevent pipe rupture
If pressure is relieved back into the storage tank there is potential to lift the frangible roof
