Emission Reduction Results for ScotRail
Collaboration between Innospec and ScotRail (UK) cuts CO2e emissions by 3676 tonnes
Innospec’s high performance ECOCLEANTM fuel additive is helping ScotRail (UK) reduce its CO2e emissions by an impressive 3676 tonnes per year. After carrying out one of the most comprehensive fuel additive tests in the UK, the train operator will start using the product across its entire diesel fleet from May 2021 onwards.
The tests were carried out at the world-renowned independent engine testing facility at Millbrook in the UK. A MTU183TD engine from a Class 170 train and a Cummins NT855 engine from a Class 158 train were both mounted to a dynamometer and tested first without, and then with ECOCLEANTM in the fuel. Cycle F of ISO 8178 (the international standard for non-road engine applications) was used to closely match the tests to real-world operation.
Innospec Product Manager Wade Pang said: “It was great to work with ScotRail. By setting up the trial, we were able to demonstrate that our fuel additive helps restore an engine to an ‘as new’ condition. The results speak for themselves. ECOCLEANTM led to reduced fuel usage and positive CO2 reductions, combined with improved engine power output and reduced engine noise.”
As demonstrated in the chart below, introducing the additive is projected to deliver over 3% in fuel savings for ScotRail (UK) annually. This translates to a projected annual reduction in CO2e of 3676 tonnes, methane reduction of 3.7 tonnes and nitrous oxide reduction of 41 tonnes.
The initiative is helping the company meet its sustainability target of eliminating carbon emissions completely by 2035. ScotRail operates a diverse fleet of diesel and electric trains and over 350 rail stations in Scotland. It is continually investing in energy efficient technologies.
