Biocides

Preventing microbial growth

A variety of aerobic and anaerobic microbes exist in fuel systems – including bacteria, mold and yeast. These microbes are generally found at the fuel/water interface and use the hydrocarbon as a food source. If left untreated, the growth of these microbes can lead to fuel quality degradation, filter blocking and fuel system corrosion.

Microbes in fuel systems often live in biomass, commonly attached to storage tank walls and roofs, as well as fuel system components. This biomass acts as a protective layer and breeding environment for microbes. As it builds up, it can quickly contaminate a fuel system.

Once formed in the fuel system, biomass is particularly difficult to remove. Biocides typically only penetrate its outer layer, meaning that the remediation of contaminated systems frequently requires the manual removal of the biomass.

Innospec’s Predator™ fuel biocides act as both shock treatment solutions, to eliminate existing microbial fuel contamination, and as preventative treatment, to stop re-contamination.

Innospec’s biocide chemistries have been carefully selected to help:

  • Maintain fuel quality and performance
  • Stop the formation of corrosive acids in the fuel system
  • Stop the formation of slime and sediments
  • Reduce the risk of unplanned shutdowns and maintenance
  • Maintain the effectiveness of other fuel additives

Innospec offers of range of fuel biocide chemistries, providing a wide scope of application techniques. The Predator™ range incorporates:

  • Predator™ 6000 – an oil-based fuel biocide
  • Predator™ 7000 – a water-based rapid performance biocide
  • Predator™ 8000 – a fast response biocide which treats both the oil and water phases.

The range is suitable for all types of fuels – including biofuels – and protects and controls against all common bacteria, yeasts and molds. The Predator™ range is also supported by Innospec’s technical service team, ensuring that our biocide solutions are tailored to your specific requirements.

Our range includes:

Predator 6000

Predator™ 6000 is an oil-based fuel biocide from Innospec. The biocide is suitable for use in all liquid hydrocarbon ground fuels and can be used for shock treatment, to kill existing contamination, or as a preventative.

Predator™ 6000 protects and controls against microbes present on all tank surfaces, making treatment more effective and minimizing risk of re-contamination.

As Predator™ 6000 is predominantly oil soluble, the biocide remains in the fuel when tank water bottoms are drained.

The typical treat rate of Predator™ 6000 is 250-1000ppm for shock treatment, and 135-250ppm for preventative treatment.

Predator 7000

Predator™ 7000 is a primarily water soluble fuel biocide from Innospec. The biocide is suitable for use in all liquid hydrocarbon ground fuels and can be used for shock treatment, to kill existing contamination, or as a preventative.

Predator™ 7000 provides rapid ‘kill performance’ in the water layer and partially transfers into the fuel layer for added protection.

The typically treat rate of Predator™ 7000 is 250-1000ppm for shock treatment, and 150-250ppm for preventative treatment.

Predator 8000

Predator™ 8000 is a primarily oil soluble fuel biocide from Innospec, which partially migrates in to any free water present in the storage tank. The biocide is suitable for use in all liquid hydrocarbon ground fuels and can be used for shock treatment, to kill existing contamination, or as a preventative.

Predator™ 8000 protects and controls against microbes present on all tank surfaces, making treatment more effective and minimizing risk of re-contamination.

The biocide provides a faster response performance than is typically found in solely oil soluble biocide systems.

Remaining in the fuel when water bottoms are drained, Predator™ 8000 also re-treats any water that may enter the tank.

The typically treat rate of Predator™ 8000 is 200-1000ppm for shock treatment, and 50-150ppm for preventative treatment.
